Mechanics on Wheelz rolls into service

6 Years and still going strong - Thank you to our loyal customers and new ones that we haven't met yet.

Mechanics on Wheelz originally opened in New Market, now out of Ijamsville, although the mobile mechanic business will meet you anywhere. Owners Robin Etchison and Ronnie Thompson talked to The Frederick News-Post about the new business that offers computer diagnostics, safety analysis, tuneups, oil changes, tire rotation, brake repair, steering and suspension repairs, welding, fuel system services, emission repair, air-conditioning service, electrical systems, power equipment and engine work.

What led you to launch this business?

We decided to start this business because we saw how people’s lives have become so busy and, with the combined experience and expertise of both owners, we felt that we can offer the community the convenience of having a mechanic come to them, whether it be at their place of employment, home, sport event or any location so they don’t have to stop their busy lives and leave their vehicles or pack up their dirty equipment (lawn mowers, snow blowers, etc.) and haul it to a shop. We can work on their autos or equipment, and they can keep doing what they need to and not miss a day at work.

Ronnie is an ASE mechanic who is also certified in autos, buses, diesel, heavy trucking, (Department of Transportation) inspections, welding, lawn equipment, snow blowers, heavy equipment, and sport equipment, and he is CDL licensed as well. We work on anything with an engine. We come to the customer for all their mechanic needs and do all the work right where the equipment is sitting for the convenience of the customer.

Robin is a certified accountant through Towson University Center for professional studies and has a certificate in accounting and bookkeeping specialties.

Why did you choose to open a business in Frederick County?

We live in Frederick County and would like to offer our services to our community. We do travel outside of Frederick County as well.

What is unique about it?

We are mobile mechanics, not just auto mechanics. Not only do we work on passenger cars, we are ASE Certified and are able to work on diesel equipment, heavy trucks, farm equipment, tractor trailers, power equipment, pre-inspections, welding and much more. We offer more than the average shop as a one-stop shop that comes to you. Our prices are lower than the average shop. We are able to do this due to low overhead.

Our company highly values women and not taking advantage of them in this industry, as we have seen many times over and over. We are 51 percent female owned.

Why do you believe you will succeed?

I feel once the community starts to recognize who we are and what we do, we have a very unique type of business. There are other mobile mechanics out there, but they do not offer a line of extensive services as we can.

Where do you see the business in five years?

We are a very small family-based business out of New Market. We hope to expand over the next five years and add more employees.
